UC DAVIS MEN'S CREW COXSWAIN CARRY
This project focuses on an illustration of a proportional figure that displays a dynamic pose reiterated in four different color schemes. I chose to create my image based on a photograph taken of the stroke-seat rower and coxswain of the UC Davis Men's Collegiate Varsity 8-man shell.

This image documents the Crew tradition of the coxswain being carried across the water into the boat before a race. The coxswain can't touch water unless their boat wins, in which case they are tossed into the water by their crew.

I thought this image was perfect for this project because this two figure pose is very interesting and the composition is very strong. The water frames the figures nicely and creates a simple but effective figure ground relationship.
Color Scheme 1 - Custom
Color Scheme Name: Mission Bay - This color system is custom made but has many of the elements of an analogous scheme. I named this scheme after the original location in which this image was taken from: Mission Bay, San Diego.
Color Scheme 2 - Complementary
Color Scheme Name: Ocean Acidification - This is a scheme that I think did not work as well. The contrast is too strong in my opinion, muted tones might have worked better. I do see potential to use these colors can be used to create a kind of photo-negative effect. The name comes from how corrosive these color feel in comparison to my other palettes.
Color Scheme 3 - Triadic
Color Scheme Name: Beach House of the Dead - This scheme worked well, the array of colors farther from each other on the color wheel made the different parts of the image more distinct. I chose this name because the scheme seems to be a nice combination of drab and bright, like a tropical graveyard or Surf Rock on Halloween.
Color Scheme 4 - Analogous
Color Scheme Name: Monterey Bay - This final scheme uses the coolest (in temperature) colors of the four and differs from the Mission Bay scheme with an overall darker tone although they are similar schemes. These colors reminded me of my home on the cold and windy beaches of the Monterey Peninsula with a temperate and slightly sinister marine vibe.
